UltraEdge joins Datalok: the power of major hubs, right next to your regions
For a long time, hosting your infrastructure in France meant choosing between two options: Paris or Marseille. They concentrate connectivity, carriers, and power — but also distance from the rest of the country. UltraEdge reshuffles the deck by turning SFR's former data center estate into a proximity network meshed across the entire territory. Datalok is delighted to welcome this operator to its marketplace and to introduce its 7 X Edge data centers, the true engines of regional connectivity.
1. Who is UltraEdge?
UltraEdge is a young player, but a heavyweight one. Born in 2024 from Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners' acquisition of 70% of SFR's data centers (for €764 million), the company has established itself as France's leading independent operator of proximity colocation infrastructure, with a mesh of 248 sites covering the entire territory.
In concrete terms, that means more than 90 Edge data centers, 35,000 m² of hosting space, 51 MW of available power and €160M in revenue in 2025. Rather than chasing Parisian gigantism, UltraEdge takes the opposite bet: bringing compute power closer to companies, where they actually work.
💡 Did you know? An Edge data center is a facility "at the edge": a local infrastructure designed to process data as close as possible to the user. The goal? Reduce latency (transmission delay) for sensitive use cases such as AI, IoT and 5G, where every millisecond counts.
2. The Datapole concept: an ecosystem, not just a building
This is where UltraEdge's proposition gets interesting. Rather than thinking of its sites in silos, the operator organises them into Datapoles: regional clusters of interconnected data centers.
Picture a solar system. At the centre, a star: the X Edge data center, an ultra-connected major colocation site planted in the heart of a large metropolis. Around it, in orbit, complementary sites (Metro Edge and "POP Edge" points of presence) spread within roughly a 100 km radius. The whole thing is linked by low-latency connections, capable of activating 10G, 100G or FiberChannel links on demand.
🎯 Key point — An SME in Limoges or Angoulême can host its data at a site nearby while benefiting from the power of the major Bordeaux site and a connection to London or Frankfurt in minutes. Hosting stays local; connectivity plays in the big leagues.
3. The 7 X Edge data centers: the backbone of the network
At the heart of each Datapole sits one of UltraEdge's 7 X Edge data centers. These are the strategic sites where the operator concentrates most of its investment. They are located in France's major metropolitan areas: Paris-Courbevoie, Aubervilliers, Lyon-Vénissieux, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Lille and Rennes, with an extension planned for Toulouse and Montpellier from 2027.
To give a sense of scale, the Vénissieux site (15,700 m²), the cornerstone of the Lyon Datapole, is the most powerful in the estate. Inherited from a former industrial site, it underwent a €15 million renovation programme covering cooling production and the expansion of hosting space.
More capacity and power
Revitalising the estate translates into more than 4.5 MW of additional available IT power. Above all, density is climbing fast: up to 15 kW per rack on new capacity, versus 3 to 5 kW in a traditional data center. That leap opens the door to AI workloads, especially since 30% of the added capacity is already DLC Ready (prepared for Direct Liquid Cooling), ready to host racks of 50 to 100 kW.
More energy efficiency
On the sustainability front, UltraEdge targets a PUE of 1.3 — PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) measures a data center's energy efficiency: the closer to 1, the less energy the infrastructure wastes outside of compute itself. To get there, the operator deploys shared cold-aisle containment colocation spaces and In-Row air cooling, all crowned by ISO 50001 certification (energy management).
4. Connectivity: UltraEdge's true playing field
A well-connected data center is like a well-served airport: its size matters less than the number of destinations you can reach. And on this front, the X Edge data centers are top-tier.
Interconnection
- More than 100 telecom carriers and transport providers interconnected
- More than 10 Tier 1 ISPs
- 5 Internet Exchange Points hosted (GIX / peering points)
Premium services
- 1st Megaport partner in France
- Simplified access to major public clouds
- Over 950 data centers and 400 service providers reachable via the platform
❓ Essential question — Why does an Internet Exchange Point (GIX / peering) change the game? Because it lets networks interconnect directly, without routing through third parties. The result: less latency, more throughput, and often a lighter connectivity bill. Think of it as a private motorway slip road between neighbours, rather than a detour via the ring road.
5. Security and sovereignty: the fundamentals
Performance and connectivity are great. But without a foundation of security and compliance, a data center is just a promise. UltraEdge ticks the boxes expected by the most demanding IT directors.
Resilience & certifications
- Tier 3 certifiable redundancy
- HDS v2 and ISO 27001 certifications
- GDPR compliance and hosting under French jurisdiction
On-site security & operations
- Physical security compliant with APSAD standards
- 24/7/365 hands-on support
- Personalised support from local teams
The HDS certification (Health Data Hosting) is worth dwelling on: it is mandatory to host medical data in France. Combined with ISO 27001 (information security management), it opens access to the most regulated environments, from healthcare to the public sector.
6. In summary: what sets UltraEdge apart
Territorial proximity
A mesh of 248 sites to host your data as close as possible to your teams, anywhere in France.
Datapole ecosystems
The power of a Paris hub and international connectivity, without sacrificing proximity.
Sovereignty & AI-ready
100% French infrastructure, HDS and ISO 27001 certified, with 30% DLC Ready capacity for AI.
Conclusion: choosing proximity without giving up performance
With its Datapoles and 7 X Edge data centers, UltraEdge offers a concrete answer to a false dilemma that long penalised regional companies: do you have to move away from your teams to access performance? The answer is now no. The same levels of power, connectivity and services as in Paris or Marseille, but anchored in the territory.
It then comes down to comparing this offer with others on the market, based on your constraints: density, location, certifications, connectivity. That's exactly where Datalok comes in: our marketplace lets you browse and compare UltraEdge's offerings — and those of many other operators — with full transparency, on objective criteria.
